The facial aging process is complex and involves all the tissue layers of the face, from the deep ligaments and fat compartments all the way to the most superficial layers of skin. While a surgical face and neck lift can address many of those deeper issues, it doesn’t address the fine wrinkles that age and sun-damage leave in their wake. As we age, our skin quality deteriorates. Our most outer layer of skin (i.e. the epidermis) thins out. We begin to lose collagen which helps keep our skin smooth, and elastin, which helps keep our skin tight. All of these changes combined lead to thin, saggy, wrinkled skin. But if surgery isn’t the solution…what is?

That’s where “resurfacing” comes into play. In the most simple terms, resurfacing works by removing the first few layers of skin. After this layer is removed, the body will undergo superficial healing, which we call reepithelialization. This leads to the formation of new collagen and elastin, ultimately resulting in a smoother, pinker, and more youthful appearance. There are several different methods available for resurfacing, including daily topical medication (Retinol), chemical peels, and lasers.

At Premier Plastic Surgery, we offer the full variety of treatments for patients looking to improve their skin quality. One of our favorites is the Era® Elite laser by Aerolase®. For the scientists out there reading this, the Era® Elite is a 2940nm Erbium laser which allows for full ablation of the epidermis, without damaging the deeper dermis. Translated, this laser precisely targets the outermost layer of skin, without causing damage to the deeper layers. This is crucial because it means there is no risk of scarring, even with darker skin tones.

One of the reasons we really love this laser is because it is fast, comfortable, and gives profound results with extremely short downtimes compared to other resurfacing methods. In fact, most people are back to their normal routines within 4-7 days! In addition to treating wrinkles around the mouth and eyes, the laser can also be used to address sunspots and acne scars.

So if you’re ready to ditch the wrinkles and get that “baby-fresh” look, feel free to reach out for more information and schedule your consultation for this amazing treatment.
